Prasar Bharati has Shaken Hands with Information and Broadcasting Ministry to Release Funds
Prasar Bharati, the parent of All India Radio and Doordarshan, and the Information and Broadcasting Ministry have signed an MoU needed for releasing the financial allocations to the broadcaster. In May 2018, this Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry and Prasar Bharati. This was due to the standoff between the MIB Ministry and Prasar Bharati on various issues. As per media reports, the Ministry withheld funds for paying the salaries of the employees. In response to these news, Prasar Bharati CEO, SS Vempati stated, “Rs 208 crores released by the public broadcaster towards payment of salaries to its staff on 28 February 2018 were from its own reserves. This prompted the ministry to issue a statement stating that Prasar Bharati had not signed the requisite MoU which is required by autonomous bodies for receiving grants-in-aid. Except Prasar Bharati, MIB Ministry has also inked MoU with Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Indian Institude of Mass Communication as well as Film and Television Institute of India.
