Watch here 7 best rated award winning short films of Indian Filmmakers. Of Course, these might be the first short film of these filmmakers. Short films are a great way to apply all that you have learnt of the Cinematic Language. Many filmmakers who later went on to be famous, first try their hands on short films and many of them won awards.

- The Accordion (2010) by Jafar Panahi
Jafar Panahi is one of the most well known filmmakers in Iran, identified with the Iranian New Wave film movement. His films were often banned in his own country but he continued to receive international acclaim and has won numerous awards.
His film The Accordion is about two kids who plays accordion on the streets of Tehran and one day while mistakenly playing music in front of a mosque, a person snatched their accordion from them. The film revolves around the themes of tolerance, non violence and respect. It won Award in the Venice Film Festival
- The Doodlebug (1997) by Christopher Nolan
Any film buff is familiar with 21st century film Maestro. He has made some of the most landmark films of our generation. His innovative storytelling and narrative approach has made him one of the most popular filmmaker in this planet.
Doodlebug is his first short film made while he was studying English Literature in London. It’s quirky narrative and precise storytelling makes it a must watch for any film buff.
- Bread and Alley (1970) by Abbas Kiarostami
The Iranian filmmaker is one of true masters of contemporary cinema. His simplistic approach to storytelling dealing with varied themes has inspired many filmmakers worldwide. Akira Kurosawa once told about him, “When Satyajit Ray passed on, I was very depressed. But after seeing Kiarostami’s films, I thanked God for giving us just the right person to take his place.” His recent demise has been a great loss for the art community worldwide.
Bread and Alley is his first short film and is cited as one his best works by many critics.
- The Killers (1956) by Andrei Tarkovsky
This Russian Master has made his mark in the film world distinguishably. In his short span of life he has made only 7 feature films, all of them are cited as masterpiece by Critics worldwide.
The Killers is his first short film while he was studying at he was a student at the State Institute of Cinematography in Russia. It was adapted from Ernest Hemingway’s short story of the same name. The film is set primarily in one indoor locations and done in simplistic yet stylized way.

- The Eight Column Affair (1987) by Sriram Raghavan
Sriram Raghavan is a well known name in the Hindi Film Industry. After graduating from FTII, he has made various mainstream popular films. His latest film Badlapur was a blockbuster.
The Eight Column Affair was his first short film made for FTII graduation. It was highly influenced from the French New Wave and was kind of a tribute to Jean Luc Godard. The film was edited by Rajkumar Hirani, another popular filmmaker now. It won the National Award for Best Short Film.
- Migration (2007) by Mira Nair
Mira Nair is known for films that portray various realistic facets of Indian Life. Some of her acclaimed films are- Salaam Bombay, The Namesake, The Monsoon Wedding.
Migration was an acclaimed short film made by her with the initiative to bring AIDS awareness in India. It was written by another popular director Zoya Akhtar.
- Two (1964) by Satyajit Ray
Satyajit Ray was the only director who took Indian Cinema to the world cinema platform through films like The Apu Trilogy, Jalshaghar, Charulata, etc.
Two was made by Satyajit Ray as a silent film for the American Television Channel PBS. It involves a rich kid living in a big house and a slum kid living in front of his house and a silent display of their toys. This was at that time highly symbolic. One interpretation of it was a display of resources between one developed nation and an under-developed nation. The film garnered critical acclaim worldwide.
