Explaining Here About The Film Distribution Process in India

Learn more about the Film Distribution in India. Distribution is the integral part of the Movie Business, it is the way a financier or a film producer gets back their returns. This article gives you the complete explanation about the Indian Film Distribution. Meanwhile, if you have any doubts (or) Opinions related to this section, please ask in the comment section below.

Glossary

Producer: A Person who Invest for making the Films is called Producer. They invest in films under a “Production House” brand name: For an instance, the film producer “Karan Johar” owned Dharma Productions he producing films under that Brand name. A film Producer is responsible to manage all the expenses in film such as payment for the artists, technicians and managing the daily expenses.

Cost Of The Film: pre-production+ Film Production+Post Production+ Advertisement  Expenses (Condition: 2% to 4% of poster publicity expenses will be debited from Exhibitors)

Distributor: A person who distributes the film through the theatres is called film distributor. The distributor buys the “distribution rights” from the producer, mostly in the very beginning itself (or) sometimes after previewing the final cut. However, the pre-acquiring of film distribution right is based on the casting, crew, director, story and the producer’s past success. Also, Now days it is a usual tendency in film distribution in India that the producers itself, distributing the films without a third party (or) an independent film producer. They were implementing this method is because of avoiding the distributor expenses.  On the basis of entertainment tax and state-to-state connectivity, Film Distribution Association of India divided the state provinces into 11 circuits for distributing the films. Sometimes the distributors directly distribute films to all these Circuits, while other times the main distributor rent (or) sell films to a local film distributor.

Exhibitors: According To Film Glossary, a person who owned theatre is called an Exhibitor. There are two ways an exhibitor, getting right to display a film in their theatre. The first method is, on the basis of a pre-agreement with a distributor hire theatre to showcase their films. The Second method is, the releasing centres (A Class Theatres) give advance money payment (theatre advance) to distributors for getting the right to display that particular film in their theatre . Above, the Secondly explained method of Film Releasing is dependable on the basis of cast and crew; sometimes it is based on the tie-up between Film Distributor and Exhibitor. Distributors get the return from the theatre and it is known as “Distribution Right”. The ‘Distribution right’ is calculated on the basis of an agreement with the theatre owner/Exhibitor Association and film distributor, as the way below mentioned tabular column shows.

Indian Film Distribution system

Hold Over: If, a Film not earns 70% of revenue from all of its three theatrical shows (A Day Count), then it is called as ‘Hold Over’. In such a case there will be a 10% less in Profit Percentage Sharing of distributors in the first week and 5% less in next two weeks.

After Five-seven weeks, the producer also has right in the ‘Distribution Share’. But, the condition is- if the distributor buy the film wholly from a producer, then the producer is not entitled to get any theatrical distribution share and satellite right (sometimes) from  the distributor.

If the Project is good enough, he can approach to all the big distributors, can show them, than they arrange a presenter of the movie, who will get profit sharing but depends of project strength. In India, there are so many movies has been produced in such a way, and got hit.

How does international distribution work? For eg Anurag Kashyaps film Ugly didn’t play in the Middle East even though there is a decent market for it. Can anyone seek to get rights to distribute a film for a region. What about old movies that have released last year and if I want to show them at a small festival? Who should you contact for those rights?

      Kamal,
If you want to showcase your films in the Middle east zones, you have to approach a distributor over there. an Example website https://www.arabfilm.com/

Also, it is not a right decision to showcase movies in short film festivals, if you want to earn money from it

        July 17, 2016 at 5:56 am

I Don Goutham, is in the media from past 15 years and primarily I am a Cinematographer and Ad Film Maker having done 150 ad-films, short films, documentaries and films. To mention a few in 2011 I made Hindi Movie RDX based on 26/11 and Devadasiyin Kadhai, a south film with Monica Bedi and Mukesh Rishi. Now the current project is in three languages that is Hindi, Tamil and Telugu which is titled Aaj Ki Freedom. RDX was inspired by the woman human bomber Story. Devadasiyin Kadhi is also a woman oriented subject based on period prostitute’s painful life. Since all my films are women oriented subjects which are connected with life even this film is based on the subject of atrocities committed on girls/women such as the heinous crime of rape or child abuse. Today we are already 1 decade into the 21st century but our actions belie us and are not keeping pace with the developments around and we let our carnal desires to take shape into action under various garbs such as maybe under the influence of alcohol. Every girl is a daughter and everywoman is a mother but if she is found alone and in the form of a stranger every body wants to objectify and use her as an object of pleasure. The Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi had once said when the moment comes when a woman/girl can walk alone anywhere in the middle of the night without the fear of any harm that day we would achieve true freedom. Today we witness that a girl who is not even alone and at 9.30 pm within the bustling metropolis is abducted and gang-raped, is this the freedom that he was looking for. Hence the film Aaj KI Freedom.

Any Short Film require a Central Board Certification?
    if yes or No.

What is the process after certification…?

    • FMF Resources

      June 4, 2016 at 3:16 pm

      No and Yes

If you want to show your film in international film festivals like International Film Festival of india, pune film festival etc, there you requires certificate.
In case you don’t decide to show your film in small film festival OR on you Tube, then Censor board certification not needed

    June 22, 2016 at 9:24 am

After completion of film what is the exact role of the producers? what is the calculation between producer and distributors after getting satellite rights?

    • FMF Resources

      June 23, 2016 at 1:09 am

      Swapnil,
That’s a Good question. We liked it.
At first, you have to understand about the roles of Producer and the Distributor.

The Role of producer is Producing Films. In some cases, he will produce and distribute Films

The role of Film Distributor is-distribute films.

Now come to the question- what is the calculation between producer and distributors after getting satellite rights?

In some cases, the satellite rights will be sold after Theatrical rights, occasionally before. If the producer sells the movie wholly to the distributor, then thereafter he haven’t had any financial rights on that movie excluding the Music. If not, he solemnly has rights to share it to TV network.

And one more thing- most of the producers of now days never sell satellite rights to distributors, because that’s the one assured way the film producers/financiers can get back their returns.

      3. There’s zero cost for film distribution. If the distributors interested in your movie, they will pay you

Salary of a Film Director (especially in India) is not fixed basis. Before starting movie, there should be an agreement (Minimum 1 CR). The director also gets some percentage if the movie works well in Box Office

Be clear in your Concept first.
Are you a Film Producer or a Film Distributor?

The Sound seems that you are a Film Producer. So, what you do is approach a Film distributor to distribute your movie to the theatres. Initially, they will give you an amount (70% of the production cost. Then after, the rest of the money will come to you on the basis of a written agreement between you and the Film Distributor

All the Best for your Movie

    Firstly thanks for this article.
    I have a question,
What are the advantages & disadvantages of large screen count & small screen count respectively ? Also how it effects the business of the movie ?

Could you please answer this or may be if you could write an article about the topic as i haven’t found enough content for the topic to understand it.

    • FMF Resources

      August 24, 2016 at 4:34 pm

Very simply say- if you are only a producer, you might possible to release your movie only on large screen count / small screen count, because it is the job of distributor and they decide the theateres.

Now comes to the real question “What are the advantages & disadvantages of large screen count & small screen count respectively ? Also how it effects the business of the movie ?”

It is impossible to say exatly. Some people preferes to watch movie in small theatres while others watch movies in multi-plexes. Say an example, if a same movie is running on nearby two theatres (large screen count & small screen count) at two big diffrence in rates, which one you go with? Probabaly, small screen count. Right?

      That’s the answer.

Film distribution is the critical part of Filmmaking

    Hi FMF Team,
First of all many thanks for the informative article. I want to know how can one get distribution rights g low budget critically acclaimes films like Dhanak or Chauthi Koot. Also, what should be the correct approach to distribute and exhibit these films as the strength of these films is content but they don’t get much shows/screens. I know it it would be a bit difficult to get large number of shows for these films but I strongly feel there is a dearth of good content and if encouraged these films can bring money. The unfortunate part is these films are not given the fair chance in the market.

Dhanak or Chauthi Koot are critically acclaimed films. It got such a big response in all the Film festivals. Always remember ‘Content is the king’ So work in such a way

    • FMF Resources

      October 29, 2016 at 11:59 pm

A minimum guarantee is a commitment that a film distributor makes in order to pay the owner of a film for the rights to distribute in a certain territory. This is usually done as a presale where, before the movie is made, a distributor will agree to pay the filmmaker a specific dollar amount for the distribution rights for that film. That price is referred to as a minimum guarantee.

    October 11, 2016 at 12:40 am

I am looking at producing either a Malayalam or Telugu Movie. I am a Singaporean and looking at a low to small budget production with new faces. Looking at a movie along the lines of family drama and the prevalent scenario of emotions and sentiments that family uses to blackmail their children. Basically a family drama where 1 child is the underdog shunned by his own family due to money and how he rises above all challenges & rises to become a success on his own with no help from his family & friends. A guy who has gone through dramatic emotional troubles and with the support of his wife goes on to show each & everyone that hardwork & persistence eventually pays off. I know that this is not a new story line but am looking at a scripter who can capture the essence in this and a director who can put it perfectly well on the silver screen.

I am a newbie in this area and what had me interested in doing such a project is my own bitter experiences in life. Looking at someone who can take this from A-Z which includes the entire production side as well as distributorship ,marketing & advertsing etc.

    Kindly contact me

    Hello, FMF. How are you?
Can you explain the below, collections in details :
lets say, if, hindi film earns, 12 crores(2 week run), on budget of, 8 crores, in india, then,

how much the producer earn, how much distributor earn, how much exhibitor earn, and how much tax will be deducted?

    1. how much(%) the tax(is it state wise or whole nation wise) will be deducted & who will give the tax
    2. 1st week percentage b/w producer & distributor & exhibitor
    3. 2nd week percentage b/w producer & distributor & exhibitor

    Regards.

      December 11, 2016 at 1:07 am

      Hi amit bajaj,
      We are doing fine.

      Lets come to your question.

If a Film earns 12 crores(2 week run), on budget of, 8 crores, in india, then,
how much the producer earn, how much distributor earn, how much exhibitor earn, and how much tax will be deducted

The very first thing you need to understand that 2 weeks is a small duration for a film and therefore it is impossible to say about the revenue distribution. However in the usual cases, Distributors will get 80% profit for the first two weeks after the movie release.

I planning to become flim distributors ths is new for me i find this business exciting but i hav capital in lakhs only not in CR so can i be partner with other big flim distributors who is already working with A list producers and making flims with A star actors. Will i get enough profit by doing this.
And if yes then how should i go about it.

      December 10, 2016 at 3:15 pm

      Ambreen,
You can do that task. But, make sure that the film distributor that you are going to partnering is a reputed one. Check his/her past records before partnering.

    • Udhayakumar

      April 3, 2017 at 6:52 am

      Dear Ambreen,

As FMF Resources said correct when you are partnering just check his all record. because my personnel experience some of people will let you kick in the Quicksand so beware of them otherwise you cant keep your laks money also. All the best.

if you purchase the film with content will be good and make it market full just do that.

      Thanks

You can’t directly distribute the movie. For distributing a movie in India, you have to contact film distributors association. They buy / distribute your film. The coast of screening depends of the demand of the movie

Hello FMF, i do not know if this question has been asked already. We are making a low budget indie movie and are trying to find out ways to sell the same. Breaking certain stereotypes this movie talks of drugs, violence and sex hence restricting our buyers.
Do guide us for the same

    Thank you

    Hey FMF team,

Great article & resource. Also commendable are your timely revert to all the queries.

Wanted to share a few thoughts on film distribution and revenue generation, specially for independent filmmakers.

Cutting straight to the chase, the Distribution cost of a film is a mammoth cost & process and is led by another big cost which is P&A. For an A grade film looking to be placed on about 1400 screens across India the kind of understood expense ration between film production cost and Distribution cost (inclusive of P&A) is 50:50. If the film is marketed well, only then will the distributer put in efforts to sell it.

The better route for small independent films is digital monetisation.

    – The cost of distribution remains small as mostly only delivery & transcoding cost is involved.
    – The market is big since digital platforms transcend borders and can engage audiences world-wide.
    – The parameters remain the same as that of theatrical release, if the film performs well, good revenues can be generated …… thought the time period of recovery is longer than the theatrical format.
    – Non-exclusive deals are executed hence they are not binding for exploitation on any other format.

We have been making efforts to further the interests of independent producers for monetising their content.

We are vendors to over 50 platforms in India & across the globe that monetise Indian content.

If you would like us to represent your title, kindly get in touch with us on eimediaindia@gmail.com

Thank you and keep the discussion movie, loads of information for everyone.

Hey, my name’s Siddhant Rane… I’ve started a production studio with some of my friends who were learning with me at MAAC. We have a concept for making an animated film which will be similar to ‘Arjun The Warrior Prince’.
We already have done some live action as well as animated short films, but this is the first time we’re doing a 1 hour 29 mins film..
We are going to start working on the project later this year. And when we’re done making it, we’d like to have it on big screens…
Having never done distribution, etc, we need some guidance…
